Personal vs organization Google Play developer account

By the TestLancer team · Updated

Quick answer

Choose an organization account if you publish on behalf of a registered business and can complete business verification, including a D-U-N-S number. Choose a personal account if you are an individual developer. New personal accounts must pass a 14-day closed test with at least 12 testers before publishing to production.

Google updates account requirements from time to time. Confirm current details in Play Console before registering.

When a personal account makes sense

  • You are building apps as an individual, not through a registered company.
  • You don't have, or can't easily get, a D-U-N-S number.
  • You are happy to run a proper closed test before launch — which is good practice anyway.

If you go personal, plan the closed test into your timeline from day one. See the 12-tester rule explained.

When an organization account makes sense

  • You publish apps for a registered business, or for clients as an agency.
  • The app handles payments, finance, health or other areas where users expect a verified business.
  • You want the company name, not a personal name, on the store listing.

Getting a D-U-N-S number is free through Dun & Bradstreet but can take time, so start early if you choose this route.

Don't choose an account type just to skip testing

Some developers register a company only to avoid the closed testing requirement. Testing exists because untested apps get bad reviews. Whatever account you pick, a multi-day test with real users on real devices will catch problems before your public users do. Read our pre-launch testing checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change from personal to organization later?

Account type changes are limited. Check Google's current guidance before registering, because switching later may mean creating a new account and transferring apps.

Is the registration fee different?

Google charges a one-time registration fee for developer accounts. Check Play Console for the current amount in your country.

Does an organization account guarantee faster approval?

No. Every app is still reviewed against Google Play policies.
