Why Google removed your reviews and what to do

By the TestLancer team · Updated

Quick answer

Google removes reviews its systems or reviewers flag as breaking policy: bought or incentivised reviews, reviews from owners or staff, spam, off-topic content, or reviews posted in suspicious patterns. Genuine reviews are sometimes caught by filters too. You can't restore removed reviews yourself; the fix is a steady flow of real reviews from real customers.

The most common reasons reviews disappear

ReasonWhat it looks like
Paid or incentivised reviewsA batch bought from a seller, or reviews given in exchange for discounts or rewards
Conflict of interestReviews from owners, staff, family, or from your own office Wi-Fi and devices
Suspicious patternsMany reviews in a short burst, similar wording, new or low-activity accounts
Policy contentOffensive language, personal information, off-topic rants, links
Reviewer account issuesThe reviewer deleted their review or account, or Google suspended the account
Over-eager filtersOccasionally genuine reviews are held or removed by automated checks

If you bought reviews

If you or an agency bought reviews, expect more of them to disappear over time. Stop immediately and don't buy "replacements" — replacement batches add to the pattern Google is detecting. Depending on how serious the pattern is, Google may restrict new reviews on the profile or, in some markets, show a public notice. Read what really happens when you buy Google reviews.

For apps on Google Play, manipulated ratings can put the app itself at risk under Play's policies. See should you buy Google Play reviews?

If your reviews were genuine

  1. Check the basics. Ask a couple of reviewers whether their review still shows on their own profile. If it shows for them but not publicly, it has likely been filtered.
  2. Look for patterns you created by accident. A QR code only used at the counter, many customers reviewing on shop Wi-Fi, or a staff member helping customers post from a shop phone can all look suspicious.
  3. Don't ask people to repost immediately. A burst of reposts can look like the same pattern again.
  4. Use official support. For Business Profiles, Google offers tools to report and appeal review moderation decisions. For Google Play, contact Play Console support.

How to rebuild your rating

  • Ask every customer, spread naturally over time, rather than running review "drives".
  • Let customers review from their own phones, on their own time, using your official link.
  • Reply to every review so readers see an active, responsive business.
  • Fix recurring complaints — new reviews will reflect the improvement.
  • For apps, test with real users on real devices before each major release, so fewer problems reach the store.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get removed reviews restored?

You can appeal through Google's official tools if you believe genuine reviews were removed by mistake. Google makes the final decision, and there is no guarantee they will come back.

Can an agency get my reviews back?

No agency controls Google's moderation. Be wary of anyone promising to restore or remove reviews for a fee.

Will my rating recover?

Yes, if you keep collecting genuine reviews steadily. New reviews count more for recent customers than an old burst of praise.
